Default HELP! Microsoft games setup is hosed...

This one's driving me crazy -

Anytime I attempt to install a Microsoft game, I get the Crimson Skies setup
instead. I initially discovered this when I tried to install the Dungeon
Siege II demo, but it seems to be a problem with ANY Microsoft game I try to
instal - Halo, Freelancer, etc. Any Microsoft games setup brings up the
Crimson Skies installer, although trying to click 'Install' on this does
nothing.

I've tried uninstalling Crimson Skies, reinstalling Crimson Skies, running
the Windows Install cleanup utility...nothing works.

Anyone have any ideas? This really sucks...

Thanks.

Hi,

Try clearing your Temp files in case it's storing the CS setup.exe:
Click START > RUN > type: %temp%
Select ALL and Delete
If you get a file in use error message;
Ctrl+Click on any individual file that can't be deleted

I tried that. Unfortunately, it didn't work.

I've also reinstalled and uninstalled and reinstalled Crimson Skies,
thinking that it might clean up some dangling files. I've tried running the
Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. I've tried booting into safe mode and
nuking my temp directory. I've tried logging in with other user accounts on
my machine. Nothing works.

Every Microsoft game I try does this. So far I've tried Freelancer, Age of
Mythology, Halo, and Mechwarrior Vengeance, and it's always the same: the
Crimson Skies installer will run. And (of course) clicking install anyway
to see what happens won't work if the game's not Crimson Skies.

I'm running XP Service Pack 2 with all of the latest updates.

Hi --

Try running the Disk Cleanup utility in the All Programs >
Accessories > System Tools folder to see if that clears it.

That, unfortunately, didn't work either...but I finally got the problem
solved after digging around a bit:

Looks as though the setup resources are stored in a file called
SETUPENU.DLL. For some reason, an outdated version of this file was hanging
around in my Windows system directory. Every time setup ran, it probably
found this file in the path first and loaded it instead of the correct
version. I nuked this file, and the problem went away.

Now I can try out that Dungeon Siege II demo....

Thanks for all the replies, Jimmy!
