Default Dungeon Siege II DEMO install problem

I can not install the DEMO/Trial version of Dungeon Siege II. I have tried
from a DVD in a PC Gamer Magazine and also downloaded it from the internet. I
get the same result from both. It does not matter what I click on "Exspress
Install or Install" I get the same error. It says: "Setup cannot install
system files or update shared files, if the files are in use. Before
continuing, close any open applications

XXXXX-067-....and so on...

This is your product ID number. If you need to call for technical support,
you will be asked for this number......" More on this part later.

I have searched, but have not seen this problem anywhere. I disabled all
non-microsoft services and all startup programs in MSCONFIG, but it still
will not run. I had no problem installing Dungeon Siege a while back, but
this wont install. I called microsoft tech support (spoke to 2 different
support centers) and they said they could not help with a DEMO program (even
though it said to call them and give the number). They said that they could
help me if I BOUGHT the game, but not with the DEMO. I am trying the DEMO to
see if I want to BUY the game. They said if they could not help me with the
problem after I bought it that I could get my money back.

What a pain!

Anyone have an idea?

Bootup in Safe Mode, try uninstalling ** Dungeon Siege and then install the Demo.
** Backup your Save Games located in My Documents/My Games first.

I can try that, but I am afraid that after I uninstall Dungeon Siege that I
wont be able to install that one again. Why would Dungeon Siege cause a
problem installing Dungeon Siege II? Does this mean that everyone had to do
this?

Default Re: Dungeon Siege II DEMO install problem

I am not sure. I tried installing the DS II Demo in Safe Mode figuring that
not much was running. If everyone had to uninstall DS I before installing the
DS II game or Demo, I am sure I would have read about that. Is there
something from DS I that is running all the time that needs to be modified by
the DS II demo?

Highly doubtful. Games do not require services or loaders
to be running in the background before the game can launch.

Default Re: Dungeon Siege II DEMO install problem

Well, I tried it, but no good. I backup up my files. I uninstalled Dungeon
Siege from safe mode. Deleted any leftover folders. Rebooted into safe mode
and tried to install Dungeon Siege II. I get the same error. I rebooted
(normal boot) same thing. I reinstalled Dungeon Siege no problem. I don't get
it.

Default Re: Dungeon Siege II DEMO install problem

Hi,

I'll do more research and post back if I find any solutions
we haven't tried yet. Does the CD install on another PC?

| Highly doubtful. Games do not require services or loaders

Default Re: Dungeon Siege II DEMO install problem

Well, I downloaded it again and now it installs. I originally tried
installing it from a PC Gamer DVD. I then downloaded it from online (can't
recall where), but same result. I downloaded it from the DS II site and now
it works. The strange thing is, I get the same message, but this time the
"next" button is not grayed out. Not sure why the other 2 failed, but it
works now.

Thanks for checking....
Scott
