ok...so i was posting on a different topic about time travel and it got me thinking...
(all this is based on the theory that if you look at something a lightyear away that we are seeing that object one year in its past)
All these scientists cannot figure out the mystery of the begining of the universe...Could we send out a gigantic mirror(assuming it won't be broken and nothing obstructs our view of it) use a super powered telescope and if the mirror is far enough out see back in time to the begining of time?

or if thats not possible could we send out a mirror not so far off and look at it(having it reflect back at us) and see our past on Earth?

see I dont get how if we send a mirror back, we can see the past. Because...isnt the thing we are seeing right now also here in the present?.

I think the thing about light years is stupid. It makes no sense how a thing that is a certian distance away, can be measured in years. Ofcourse if you count the time it will take you to get there at a certain speed

well my physics teacher taught us some stuff about it...
what happens is...if a planet is 1 light year away from Earth then it takes light(traveling at the speed of light) to reach that planet if it started from Earth. hmmm a more simple example would be the sun...if it went out it would take 8 minutes for the last ray of light to disapear from sight on earth, because it takes the light 8 mins to travel to Earth from the sun

Devil, lightyears is a measure of distance, not time. It's the distance that light travels in 1 year.

MooK, in concept that'd work, except look at it this way: Say in the year 2000 the mirror is sent out. It'll take longer than a year to get it a lightyear away from us, so it's pretty much useless, because by the time it gets set up, we're only looking as far back as when we first sent out the mirror, or later.

yeah i guess it would take awhile...but if we could move it past the speed of light..
er wait...if we were to get it out there (say 2000 lightyears) and we looked for it wouldn't we see the space 2000 years in its past so the mirror wouldn't be there?

Sometimes this whole light years stuff gives me a headache...
What would happen if a laser type thing from 20 lightyears away hit us and it was traveling at light speed would it hit us 20 years in the past? I'm not sure but i didn' think so. My teacher said something about time slowing down and almost stopping when something travels at the speed of light...

This is why there cant be something that lets you see in the past. Even a mirror woudlnt work.

because...if we sent the mirror back...well there isnt a copy of the earth back there in which time is frozen that we can look at in the first place.
