Mostly private schools have uniforms, and some schools in the city.

All my schools had uniforms. Man, it's a pain in the ass. Atleast college doesn't. Not that I'm going to the college here. White shirt/Grey pants. The private schools here have different uniforms.

I would presume in most cases it's the same reason places have dress codes, so there aren't distractions in class.

Anyways..if you come to a city like Chicago/L.A/New York, and live/go to school in these (and some other) cities, you will find a thing called Gangs. And some of them have "Gang Colors", and if you are wearing their "gang colors" and walk on the street, and get confronted by these "gangsters" you will get beaten up. Simple.
