College or University
First of all, is there a difference between the two??
Currently, I'm frantically searching for one. As it seems, I'll be missing the current cemester, and will start January.
I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions, I asked a few people. Including this Professor that worked with me in that program (trip) I was on. Although her suggestions seem more focused on where she'd like to live. And she put the Illinois ones first, because she wanted me to be close to where she is. Nevermind that, anything decent is okay. I'm gonna study Computer Engineering, and just want a nice university in a nice area with nice weather.
Oh, you can suggest whatever. But if anyone (and I doubt someone will) is willing to bother, it has to be from this list. Because it needs to be one that is acknowledged by the government. Just follow these simple intructions to get to it:-
Go here: www.kuwaitculture.com
1. Click "Students"
2. Click "University Listings"
3. Next to "Universities in the U.S.A" click "By major"
4. Click the letter "E"
5. Click the first "View Speciality" next to Engineering.
6. Check the box next to "Computer Engineering"
7. Finally click "Search" at the bottom.
Boom! List of 128.
Btw, the ones she suggested are (with her notes included):
-Northwestern University (Chicago)
-Univ. of Illinois (Chicago or Champagne)
-Florida International University (in Miami - I LOVE Miami! - great weather)
-George Washington University (in D.C. - good school)
-Johns Hopkins (in Baltimore, MD, near D.C. - also a good school and a cool town)
-University of California - Santa Cruz (good school, cool, earthy town, nice weather, near San Fran)
-University of Michigan - Ann Arbor (Very good school!, very cool town, but COLD winters and nice summers)
-University of Pittsburgh (my alma matre!, nice town, good school, but not nice winters)
-University of Virginia (good school, nice year-round weather, small town feel)
-University of South Carolina (where I went to grad school, great weather, neat town, ok school)
-University of Southern California (good school, nice weather, but L.A is a bit dangerous....)
Any feedback would be great. Also, my friend applied to www.sfsu.edu
I'll apply to four atleast, just to be sure.
Thanks.
Edit: Alot of people are me telling the University of Michigan and Northwestern University (Chicago) are really good....what do you think?

Yeah, Northwestern is a good, well-known school. Univ. of Illinois (Chicago) is another great one dunno about the one in Champagne.

About the best medical school there is. (Ivy League) Extremely hard to get into though.
What exactly do you want to study?

Computer Engineering.
I want a cool suburban area, near a city or town. Or urban but safe.
And chamapgne is out of the the question. It's in the middle of nowhere.

Part 3: Difference Between College and University
10 September 2001
HOST:
Our VOA listener question this week comes in an e-mail from Korea. Chang-mi Kim asks what is the difference between a college and university. We include this question in our series of reports for foreign students who want to study in the United States.
People attend a college or university to continue their education after high school. This prepares them for work. It also provides them with a greater understanding of the world and its past. And it helps them value the arts and sciences.
Students usually attend a college for four years and gain a bachelor’s degree. Colleges generally do not support research or offer graduate degrees. Universities usually are much larger than colleges. Universities carry out research. And they offer several kinds of degrees in many areas of study.
They offer bachelor’s degrees after four years of study. Universities also offer graduate degrees that require additional years of study, such as master’s degrees and doctoral degrees. Modern universities developed from those of the Middle Ages. They took their name from the Latin word “universitas.” It meant a group of people organized for one purpose.
The first European colleges were groups of students who came together because of the same interests. In England, colleges were formed to provide them with living places. Usually each group was studying the same thing, so the word “college” came to mean one area of study.
Most American colleges today teach an area of study called liberal arts. The liberal arts were subjects first developed and taught in ancient Greece. They trained a person’s mind. They were considered different from subjects that were useful in life.
The word “college” also means a part of a university that teaches one area of study. That is because the first American universities divided their studies into many areas and called each one a college. An example would be “Teachers College” of Columbia University in New York City. It is the part of Columbia University that prepares people to be teachers. The university includes many other colleges too, like those that teach medicine and law.

That answers the college and university part.

Hey, thanks!
I'm probably gonna apply for both Michigan and Northwestern. Considering Wisconsen. And will check out something in California. I need a few more to apply to.

My brother looked at both Michigan and Northwestern. I think he applied to Northwestern, and got in, but decided not to go there. He's majoring in Biomedical Engineering.
Also, my dad went to University of Wisconsin - Madison after coming here from India. Decent school.
I'd say Michigan and Northwestern are good choices, and if you think you're good enough, apply to Johns Hopkins. Great school, if you get in.

I see. Thanks. But for me, the school doesn't have to be all that. Just good is enough. Or very good. The area also matters, and the social life. I'll see what I get though. Hopefully I get accepted into more than one, and I'll have an option or two.
