No, actually, Derek, not. Zulu knots are older than a lot of those straight-out-of-the-70s styles you have described ya sexist little shiznit (women had short hair in the 20s!), they're a traditional hairstyle of several African tribe, one of which is, obviously, the Zulu.

They don't take THAT long. Doing the whole head takes about 45 minutes if you don't know what you're doing... about 20 minutes if you do.
