In Photoshop make the entire workspace go from black to white (top to bottom) using the gradient tool. Then use the difference clouds filter and then invert it all (ctrl + i). Then go to Image > Adjustments > Levels, and move the middle slider all the way to the right. Then to add colour to lightning I prefer to use Image > Adjustments > Color Balance.
EDIT: To have multiple lightning together just create a new layer, repeat the process and then change the new layer's blending mode to screen, thus removing the black.

Hey cool, finally got that extra space off from the end of people's user name, huh. ;)
Seems pretty neat, it'll take a while to get used to, but I won't mind it.
