Default UPDATE: Xbox and PlayStation 2 Sales

Description

"According to a letter Microsoft sent to analysts, they sold 468,000 units of their XBox console in November. That number represents a doubling in console sales compared to October. The above figure does not include any units sold in November at Wal-Mart. The sharp rise in XBox sales, claim analysts, is proof that Microsoft's aggressive policy with a variety of new bundle deals, is paying off. Although impressive, the rise does not present any current threat to Sony which, in a display of superiority, told analysts, rather nonchalantly, that it had sold 1 million PS2's in the first couple of holiday shopping weeks.

More XBox's sold however, means more owners and this has resulted in a rise in software sales, Microsoft's profit making hope. In total 2.4 million games were sold in November, the second highest figure ever achieved by the console. The best selling title, for the same period, was Ubi Soft's Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, selling 224,000 copies in just two weeks. Five other Xbox titles sold in excess of 100,000 copies in November.

Rivals Sony's champion title is SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals, an online game which has sold half a million copies in three months. In europe the new PS2 hit is the controversial The Getaway.

Microsoft's other great hope, the XBox Live starter kit, was also reported to be selling well with 136,000 units having been sold so far. Sony however, are way ahead on sales in this field of the market as well. They announced that they expect to have sold 400,000 online adaptors for the Playstation 2 console, by the end of this year, although they did not break that figure down into broadband, dial-up sales.
Sony also announced that total U.S. sales, software and hardware, have exceeded USD 6 billion so far this year.

Nintendo have not yet reported their holiday sales figures."

Let's hope Nintendo can release their figures charts and show everyone how they are dominating the industry.

Nintendo are doing fine in USA

December 18, 2002 - Today Nintendo released first official sales numbers regarding a number of its holiday products. Everything is based largely on the sales spike that occurred during the November shopping season. Following is the bullet-point list that the company released, complete with plenty of comparisons to its competitors:
The November NPD report of sales data from American retailers shows that Nintendo GameCube jumped more than three full percentage points in next generation console share. Meanwhile, PlayStation 2 increased two percentage points ... all at the expense of Microsoft's Xbox ... which lost five points of the market.
Unit sales of Nintendo GameCube and Microsoft's Xbox were dead even in November (468,000 units each) -- despite Microsoft giving away two free games with their hardware.
Nintendo GameCube also showed the biggest jump in software sales, climbing more than 150 percent over October totals compared to 97 percent for the Xbox and 48 percent for PlayStation 2.
With the entry of Metroid Prime, Nintendo GameCube is on track to have four new titles this year eclipse one half-million unit sales, while no new Xbox title has yet to reach that mark.
Both Metroid Prime for Nintendo GameCube (#2) and MetroidFusion for Game Boy Advance (#10) appeared among the top 10 sellers for all game sales in November.
With sell-through of 1.3 million units, Game Boy Advance was as popular in November as PlayStation 2. Game Boy represents 33 percent of the total hardware market.
Nintendo held 46 percent of the total hardware share for the month of November, an increase of 11 percent over October. Sony held 42 percent (-6 percent), while Microsoft held only 12 percent (-5 percent)

Its good to know 3 consoles can coexist without putting each other out of buisness. It proves how big Videogames really are.
