Oh no you definately don't have to become a member... It's just something you do for yourself. It's mostly connected to the punk rock scene though, becuase that's where it was started. If you go to a concert and see a bunch of kids with Xs on their hands, that means they're straight edge. But it isn't like a cult or a memberish type thing. All you've got to do is make the decision not to have casual sex, not to drink, not to smoke, and not to do drugs, and you're straight edge.
wow, i have tried it before and its super boring in this town without drinking. All the people who dont drink or anything just set on there ass all week/weekend. I hate that, so i am not straight edge. I drink and if i c ould i would probably tend in some casual sex .
A lot of punk rock bands though aren't straight edge, but still a lot of the fans are. Next time you're at a concert, look around for Xs on hands. It comes from the tradition at bars of putting Xs on underagere kids hands to show they wouldn't be drinking. Anyway, rock on!
Ahh, and should you ever see somebody with a pin or a shirt or something that says "sXe," that also means straight edge.
