He was real(Hell if I remember the name, but it was some Dutch dude) although Santa is fake, there was some gift giving guy that started the santa claus thing.
Santa Claus is an old figure from the bible. Hence the same, Saint Nick.
He was considered to be a saint because of what he did. He would dress up and give gifts and presents to those less fortunate to himself. The tradition was continued, and they got his name as Santa somehow (i don't know how).
I'm sure theres some site on the web that describes the whole thing in detail though.
