Default Media brainwashes the masses?

I mean these arent my veiws but we had a huge debate in media class the otherday. Basacilly do you think the media heavly influences the way people act (buying products) I am not talking about major "Bush brainwashes people for war!1!!!" type conspiracy theroes rather small litttle influences.

Yeah, I definitely think that, I don't think there's a question. Take music for example. The media pushes boy bands like N'SYNC and makes everybody love them on MTV (which I don't watch by the way). But when you break N'SYNC down, all they are are dancers with garbage lyrics and crappy meoldies to boot.

I think the media influences people by, telling them what they want them to here. They will only show skinny anarexic models for skin products that look like they haven't eaten in 5 years.

Media helps to shape America in to what it is. Not necessarily a positive thing but the media affects what people buy and for some people, what kind of music they listen to and the way they conduct themselves. You guys ever see the movie Josie and The Pussycats? I doubt a lot of you guys have. In the movie there is a machine that can be programmed to make people buy things and think things when they listen to certain songs. The media is a lot like that I think except less exagerated. When foreigners think of American icons they think of Britney Spears and the likes of that, it may not be the greatest thing but media made her an International icon that somewhat represents us through the media to other countries and such.

i agree that the media can change hte culture of a society but i dont agree with thsoe anti GTA people. They claim that a major factor in the columbine shootings was doom and stuff like that. thats such a lot of shit (pardon my french). the kids must have been severely messed up mentally. and the parents, the ones BUYING the games or just not watching their kids are to blame. My parents know that i play vice city and unreal and cs and they dont care. they know that they have established a moral value system with me and i will not shoot up a school or cause mass violence. its the parenting that causes the problems, not the media.

I heard something on the radio the other day about activists wanting to make movies with smoking or smoking references Rated R. I found that to be a load of bullshit, I mean, you can stand outside of a 7-11 any time of the day and see people smoking. I hope this was just a random joke or else I would be disappointed in the common sense of mankind.

of course the media affects the things we buy and pretty much our environment. i mean you've never learned about propoganda techniques like using hip colors, buzz words, and other types of phrases like "virtually" (which by the way means 'not in fact') and "everyone buys it" or something like using a celebrity using the product so u will want to buy it. tv and music affect youth a lot- i mean look at all the britney wannabes, and why everyone buys a shirt at abercrombie or american eagle for $40 and can get the same one at another store for $10....
