Mafia
I picked up Mafia for Christmas and, if you haven't noticed, have been spending most of my time playing it, at the expense of my posting rates around here.
But anyway, The engine is about 10x more complex/fun than the GTA III, the aiming is a more effective, and the 15 square miles of urban city and rural highways are perfectly detailed and textured. The cars are more numerous, realistic and simply entertaining. The missions are always new and inspired, unlike the repetitive nature of GTA. Major 0wnage.
A big sleeper hit. This game rocks. Go buy it.

It's third person, GTA 3 style.

I'll pick this game up when I get my new PC in a few days.
Is it really linear compared to GTA3/VC?

Yeah, it's pretty linear, although there is a mode called "Free Ride" and "Free Ride Extreme" where you can drive around in a car of choice (if it's available on Free Ride) and kill people, get speeding tickets and what not. I haven't really tried it, though, so I couldn't tell you exactly.
Free Ride Extreme, I believe, has new cars, but you have to beat the game first, which I haven't done.
For the most part, there's nothing stopping you from abandoning doing missions for a while after you've completed one, or simply doing something else, as long as you don't actually "fail" something, in which case, you are reverted back to the last save point.
There are multiple ways to complete most levels, and in real comparison, the cutscenes that are part of the "linear" part of the game are incredible, so it doesn't take away from the game or the concept at all.

its not really a sleeper hit, if u go anywhere on gamespot.com they rant and rave about it. sleeper hit would be something like frequency on ps2. great game but no one has heard of it. most people that consider themselves pc gamers have heard of mafia. i havent played mafia but i do plan on buying it sometime.
