For HTML, Why is the column tag in tables <td>?

Rows is <tr> (tr= table row)

But I don't know why <td> is <td> and not <tc>.

Anyone know a reason for it, or what the 'd' stands for? I'm guessing table down, but that makes it harder for people to memorize...
