from what i have noticed it only does that for blue bottom disc's. i have the same problem, but i have a 2 year warrenty from best buy. i have been planning to send it to them for like a month but havent got around to it. they want me to put it in the original box with the stirofoam and shit but i only have the box. It's probably cause your cd's are a bit messed up on the bottom. Take a look at your ps2 CD'S and see if you have medium scratches or deep scratches cause small are nothing. I say that cause i=scratch cd have a harder time to play load and everything else it is supposed to do.
So that might be your problem...
