Default Debate Regarding Sony's Dominance...

The Playstation 2’s lead is not as large as some tend to think. Neither the Xbox nor the Gamecube will ever catch the Playstation 2 in console sales. The Playstation 2 can still lose this console war even with having the most consoles sold worldwide. You may ask, how could this be? I will give you an example. Every one watches sports or has played a sport at some point in their lives. A perfect example is the game of football. One football team could have a total of 500 yards of offense, while their opponent could only have 100 yards of total offense and still end up losing the game. How can a team with 500 yards of total offense lose? It is simple; they never scored a touchdown. In system wars the game is still 0 to 0. The Playstaion 2 is gaining all of the yards, but has not scored the winning touchdown yet. I know you are asking, how can the Playstation 2 lose? It is something called perception. What are people going to think about the Playstation 2 three to four years from now? Will the Playstation 2 be perceived as the system that is outdated? Perception can change very quickly. Micheal Jordan was onced perceived as the greatest player to play the game, but when you look at Micheal Jordan compared to his new competition he looks very old and outdated. Even his former team the Chicago Bulls, which had millions of fans, are now perceived as a bunch of losers. You can’t get 500 people to go to a Bulls game now. The same thing that happened to the Bulls and Micheal could happen to the Playstation 2. People are starting to notice the differences between the Xbox and Playstation 2. People are also noticing the difference between the Gamecube and Playstation 2. The Playstation 2 is constantly receiving the worst port of games. Will consumers perception of the Playstation 2 become synonymous with inferior and outdated hardware, while the Gamecube and Xbox become synonymous with cutting edge technology and the systems to own? In the end, the Playstation 2 could have gained all the yards, but the Gamecube or Xbox could score the winning touchdown.

I agree with you and a certain extent. I think PS2 definalty will not win the war by their sales. First of all SMS sold better than GTA3 and Halo. And GTA3 is one of thier best selling games. It takes more to win a console war by sales. All these sales could be subject to overhyping. People overhyped a game, and more people base their opinion off of some elses which is not the proper way of doing this. And when those people waste their hard earned cash they will not even get into the game at all. My freind has bought a lot of PS games a whole tub full just laying around. He has never played more then 5 hours on all of them combined regarding FFX. Overhyping is my theory of the great selling for the PS2. Now games arent all sales. quality gaming is what appeals to me the most. The game has to be good for me to get into it and spend my money on. I do not go by what others say i read numerous reveiws and look a pictures enough not to spoil the game and i base my decsion off of that. This is an accurate way of doing things. Now graphics really depends on the person. I need at least a descently good graphic game. Ill go as low as animal crossing, but no game doesnt get much worst then that. All of these contributes to the war. GCN is pretty strong in all of these. The library may not be as big but the warmth in the games is huge!

Nice comments. My opinion? I'll just go around, buying games like the rest of the public, spying on Rareware and play Nintendo games. If one does go though, I'm sure another competitor will enter the market.
