I would suggest 2000, or NT. The best Windows systems around.
XP is exploitable like a bisnatch, by the way, especially with a cable without routers or anything. You would be vulnerable.

I think I confused what you said, you meant all you had otherwise was 98 and there are no drivers for that, and you aren't able to get XP. So you're stuck. Now I see.
