UN Oil-for-Food Program
I guess I'm not surprised that this hasn't been getting more attention. I think I first brought it up 6 months ago when the malfeasance was first reported. Still, the US wasn't involved so it's not important on the world stage.
"If you read the reports, it looks as if the Saddam regime had nothing to do with it. They did nothing wrong - it was all the U.N.," Annan said."
Yea, I feel your pain, Kofi.

Ya know, sometimes I think everyone in the world was getting rich through Iraqi oil except me. How did I miss out?

You're just not ruthless enough, my friend. Remember - wherever there's human suffering there's money to be made.
Course, make sure you've either got an army big enough to go get it for you, or the political clout to swing the deals your way.

Do you think it´s just a coincidence that the Afghan poppy fields have more than tripled in size since the US invasion?
If i was still using heroine, i would move there in a jippy! It´s a junky´s paradise.

As expected, there's no moral outrage here, no condemnation of the perpertrators. Is it because there's not a significant loss of innocent life? No, surely thousands have died for want of food or medicine. Is it because those in power didn't use their influence to secure vast sums of money for themselves and their friends? No, certainly vast sums of money were in the offing and UN officials used their power to get it. Is it because there are no ulterior motives to explain UN lack of desire to move against Saddam Hussein. To the contrary, there is significant reason to believe that those who opposed holding Hussein to his agreement had the most to gain from his hold on power.
The apathy has a much simpler explanation: the US isn't involved.

If you by that mean: someone apologized. Noone pretends like the scandal doesn't exist. Annan still forcefully spoke out against the fraud even though there were family involved. A serious investigation is launched, and the leader of the cabal says, waving off for instance the French when they are blaiming those responsible for approving the contracts in question - the US, that the fault alone is with the UN as an organization. Then yes, the fact that the US "isn't involved" is the reason for the "apathy". It's also the reason why noone has so far managed to come up with any valid criticism of how the issue is handled now.

Yeah right, coincedence thats funny. With all these new version of weed popping around I wouldnt be surprised if the US is providing at least some sort of a steroid chemical to make em grow quicker.
But trippling in size, its good you brought that up, Maybe Afghan wants to be the next Cuba :x
