Religion is generally good as one starts to think about the possibilities and outcomes of a situation from a different angle. Organized religion however is bad. It biases one's perception, distorts facts based on their "teaching" and makes use of portions of a whole.

The only "religion" that i know wich might have good influences, is shintoism. And to some extent, budism. All the others so called main-stream religions are quite harmfull on the planet´s stability. We would be better off if we dropped them all together.
The major religions have been the major source of conflict ever since man discovered he could walk on two feets. And what good has come of it?
I can´t think of one single good thing religion as brought to Mankind, probably because there isn´t any. The only exception is shintoism, with its respect for all living things, and maintaining harmony amongst all creatures. Maybe that´s exactlly what is missing in all the other "big" religions...
We should grab every Bible, every Torah and every Koran in existence, and build a monumental bondfire. Or recycle the paper...

Religion is simply the organization of faith. I think faith has a very positive impact on society.
Faith is your OWN, personal thoughts and beliefs. Religion is the organization of similar beliefs.
IF a religious leader manipulates the faithful and alters their beliefs to fit into a mold or image that he/she is creating, then it is a bad thing. Religion, when elevated to fanaticism is a very bad thing.

"I believe that religion, generally speaking, has been a curse to mankind - that its modest and greatly overestimated services on the ethical side have been more than overcome by the damage it has done to clear and honest thinking."
-H. L. Mencken
"More wars have been waged, more people killed, and more evil perpetrated in the name of religion than by any other institutional force in human history. The sad truth continues in our present day."
-Charles Kimball
And my own opinion: bad.

I think people of faith contribute great things to society; unfortunately, a large percent of all societies have claimed to be people of faith solely to be able to accomplish what they wanted to do (usually steal or kill).
I don't think that religion has been bad, per se, because if the people who use religion for their own wicked purposes didn't have religion to blame it on, they would certainly find another excuse (patriotism?).

I think those who would do great things for society would contribute regardless of religion. Those who would take from society would take regardless of religion.

That is what I was trying to say. If you believe that (which I think is right), then why is religion bad in your view?
