Organ Donation
Selling your organs is illegal. Some have proposed allowing federal tax breaks for people who donate organs.
Should we allow this? Why? Why not?

How would a tax break work? I mean you wouldn't need a tax break after you donate your organs since you are dead and don't have to be paying taxes.

People can donate a lung or bone marrow without dying, can't they? I would also extend it to people who donated blood.
Also people who signed the organ donor box on their license could get a tax break for their estate.
I think this would be a great plan to implement.
Different organs could earn a different tax break.

That is a messed up idea. Why encourage it with financial incentives??? It should be a good deed... period.

Not enough people want to do the good deed. It is more important to save lives than to feel good about the system.

I have been a registered marrow donor for 10+ years and never was called upon. I used to donate blood. In Germany you could go to a clinic like place to take care of your donation.
I was shocked to find that donating in the US is done in public areas or donor busses and a donation office is about 1 hour away. Not going to work for me so I don't do it any more........

Would it be worth your time if each pint of blood you donate could earn you a $100 tax credit?

then driving 1 hour in houston traffic may offset the pain to do so... but i have more than enough deductions right now... so if i need the 100 credit... surely... 30 mins for 100 $? Yes... nice hourly rate :-P
the only problem is that you can donate a pint every 2 weeks, that is 2600 $ per person, 5200$ with a 2 person household... it wouldn't be financable....

Credits some off the total tax due, they are not deductions. I was using $100 as an example. I don't know what the figure would be.

I would disagree with a tax break, but would agree to creating a market for organs. Selling someone else's organs should of course be illegal, but you should be allowed to sell your own organs.
