Can you make an argument that English actually isn't the most important language to know?
Important in what way? In professionall world it depends on location, but in general id say its "important" language since it became something like an universal language.

Is the importance of a second language the location of the speaker?
Of course. In Slovenia id say second most important language is either German or Serbo-Croatian... cant say which.

It also may be interesting to know which languages everyone speaks.
English and Serbo-Croatian. Also trying to learn Russian... I never liked learning languages

(To save time, I will assume the Americans only speak English. LOL)
LOL
Id still llike to know which languages Americans speak. And how many (and wich) languages are mandatory in schools.

The english language is by far the most important. Whenever you have two diferent cultures, two diferent peoples with diferent native tongues, they resort to english to comunicate. Everywhere on the world, where ever you go, english language is the chosen form for people to understand each other.
Itīs not just a corporate and business thing. Itīs way bigger.
If we had a census world wide, i would bet the english language is the second language of choice for the majority. Just look at tthe chosen language on the net. Always in english.
Some countries make of learning the english language a top priority on school programs.
While mandarin, arabic or spanish are important only if you find yourself in a specific part of the world.

You're not planning on attending one of those terrorist camps, are you?
