Kerry, Closet Frenchman
GOP Exposé: Kerry, Closet Frenchman
By Dana Milbank
Tuesday, March 23, 2004; Page A17
Mon dieu! The Republicans are trying to turn John Kerry into a frog.
Bush pal and Commerce Secretary Donald L. Evans recently said publicly what his colleagues have long been saying privately: He called President Bush's Democratic opponent a "fellow of a different political stripe who looks French."
Those are fighting words these days, when anti-French feelings are running high because of the diplomatic fight over Iraq. The Republican National Committee has been sending out regular news releases about Kerry's French relatives and his popularity in France. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) has been known to start a speech with: "Good afternoon, or, as John Kerry might say, 'Bonjour.' "
***
Kerry's European sophistication and impressive language skills would be an asset; but this is a time when the president mocks as "intercontinental' an American reporter for asking a question in French to the French president.
NOTE: So much for high-minded debate, huh?

You expect anything different from these folks? If you can't beat them you can at least ridicule their abilities (although supperior to yours) in order to look like the hero!
Sad that they mock Kerry's ability to speak another language... when their own party leader has problems with his native tongue.... BAAAHAHAAHA

Actually, unless I am wrong, Kerry speaks both French and Norweigan.

Kerry has actually tried to downplay his abilities so as not to look too French to Americans. He has refused, at least once, to answer questions posed to him in French.

This is like smart black inner-city children who intentionally hide the fact that they are smart because they are afraid they will be beat up by their classmates.

That being the case, I think the real question is: Do we want someone running the country who is afraid to stand up for who he really is?
Kerry has tried to hide the fact that he's quite wealthy... well, his wife is anyway. Not sure how that doesn't translate to his being wealthy. He's tried to downplay his French knowledge and abilities. He's tried to downplay his anti-war/anti-soldier comments he made after VietNam.
It's basically as hypocritical as Clinton saying he smoked pot, but didn't inhale. Or that he didn't have "sex" with that woman.
Why can't our political leaders stand up for who they are? If you smoked pot, spoke French, did an intern, etc. why not stand up proudly and say "yep, I did those things"? I'd much rather have a president who you knew you could trust because he wasn't afraid to stand behind his statements.
Does anyone else have an issue with all this sidestepping and backpedaling that Kerry has been doing?

No, but I have an issue with a society that makes these steps necessary.
There's enough idiots in any given electorate, that you're forced to keep a low profile or you'll lose far too many votes.

I think it's really sad, that in order to become the president of the US you have to pretend you're uncivilized and narrow minded. And sad is also the fact that just by saying that the other candidate looks "french", you can make him loose thousands and thousands of votes, because "a true patriot would never vote for a goddamn frenchie!"
Talk about an intellectual political debate....

Yeah, and if your leader went AWOL, why not admit it and come clean? And if your leader happens to have used cocaine, why not admit that too and join the Ford Clinic program? Why not admit a leader can also be arrested for DUI?
Or why can´t a leader stand up for the baffon he is, and admit his IQ is small, and say "Yep, i did those things"?
Yeah! Leaders are not what they used to be, aren´t they? They don´t make them like they used to.
I share your pain...

If not straight out admitted it, he has at least given hints about his abilities and intelligence.
