Default Hero

Has the word "hero" lost is meaning due to its misuse and downright abuse?

First we would have to determine what a "hero" is. Do you mean everyday heros, or the likes of William Wallace?

And what misuse are you talking about? Do you mean the "all our brave soldiers abroad are true heros" -misuse or something else? Have I missed something?

I keep hearing about the "heroes" who died on 9.11. Some people who died on 9.11 were heroes, but most of the people who died were victims, not heroes.

I heard that Derrick Fisher (LA Lakers) who won the basketball game with a spectacular shot was a hero. He is a basketball player who made a great (and lucky) shot, not a hero.

That is what I am talking about.

For me, a hero is someone who risked or sacrificed his / her life for some noble deed. Nothing less

That is what I think also, although the denotation of the word "hero" does allow for other uses.

What then is a noble deed? Must it be considered a noble deed by all? some? a majority? What if the actor believes it to be a noble deed? What if the actor does not believe it to be a noble deed yet does it anyway?

I agree that the term has been getting a lot of unnecessary use lately. But we have a new term now - "true hero" as opposed to your everyday, hoop shootin' type of hero.
