Well, that depends on where you are, doesn´t it? Jails aren´t the same everywhere, and i can tell you with 100% certainty that in my country´s case jails are just polished shithouses and crime schools. All the convicts do all day is sit in a cell and watch TV (when they are allowed to have one).
There´s no work, no school, no passtimes. Only hard time.
When you manage to get some sort of occupation, the more fitting name should be "slave work", as it doesn´t pay virtually anything. And when you finally manage to come out, you are stigmatized by everybody else! Ex-convicts aren´t hired to do anything, not even street sweepers. But that´s a different story.

Race had nothing to do with it. Sorry. She is an extremely sick person and would have received the same verdict regardless. Andrea Yates is the prime example that a child murdering mother gets the guilty verdict with disregard to the race.

I agree. Speculating what a Texas jury is going to do is not the issue.
In fact, I am unsure what the issue is...

That a murderer is insane does not make the victim any less dead. If the length of incarceration is 8 1/3 to 25 for murder, and the defendant should not be allowed to avoid incarceration because he or she was mentally insane at the time of the murder. Instead, we should incarcertate the insane person in a hospital until he or she is well, and then he or she should complete the term in prison.

Knowing the loonie bin system in the US very little, I can only imagine that this is not a place to get well if you are sick, especially once you are commited by a court it will take forever to get out. I don't think the bin is any less horrific than the pen, but agree that they should not be released pre-maturely. On the other hand, do we have statistics that provide how many "insane" offenders were released before their prison terms would have been up? This may be a nice idea for a dissertation....
