Bush: "Rumsfeld doing a superb job"
Whar is he thinking?
The Red cross apparently complained 29 times secretly to the US througout the past year and Bush is praising Donald Rumsfeld as doing a "superb job" and that the nation owes him gratitude?????????
Someone clue me in as I am at a loss.... He should be held ultimately responsible for the abuses in Iraq... Any comments?

You seem surprised....that surprises me.
I'm only surprised about the absence of some adjectives. Shouldn't Bush have said "you've done a superb job for the glorious and heroic people of the United States. Our proud and righteous nation owes you gratitude. God bless you and god bless America!!"
Yes, now it sounds like a statement of an US politician! lol.

Bush has always been disconnected from reality because his advisors do whatever they can to keep bad news from the oval office.
The problem in this country is that people are so brainwashed that they believe what they are told regardless of the evidence to the contrary. I should know. I was once among the clueless.

It's pretty simple, Bush can't fire Rumsfeld (since he needs him to take the blame for anything bad that happens in Iraq until the november) so what's left other than showing his support for Rummy?

If he now supports Rumsfeld in the way he does, there is no way the man can be the scapegoat in November....

Seems I didn't express myself too clearly. I don't think he wants him as a scapegoat, he needs him as a buffer.
If Rumsfeld is replaced with anyone else, all the blame for the things that would still happen (or old things that surface) down there would go directly to the Commander in Chief.
And if he should win the election (god forbid!), there's no use in already damaging the reputation of Rumsfelds successor.

Off topic, but I always find it very reassuring when your "conversion" gets brought up. It shows that intelligent people can, and do change their minds even concerning serious issues. I know, since my own views regarding the USA have also changed a lot during the last couple of years.
And now back to the issue....

Thanks. It doesn't take great intelligence to have an open mind. Only a fool sticks to an entrenched opinion when there is no reason to do so.

It doesn't require perhaps great intelligence, but enough. There are A LOT of those who just pass the facts and go on with their blinders on. They stick to their views no matter what. To me those people are not by any means intelligent but rather, as you said, fools.

Being a fool when it comes to life does not exclude intelligence. There were hundreds of PhD's in Nazi Germany, there are a huge amount of professors and doctors in China buying into the ideology. They are not lacking intelligence as can be seen at their academic performance/achievements but may not care to change as the current system and ideologies got them where they are....
