Italian Cops Add Lamborghini to Fleet

ROME (AP) - Italian drivers who like to use highways as their personal speed-tracks are about to lose the race.

Italy's state police presented a sleek new addition Friday: a Lamborghini Gallardo, with a top speed of 192 mph. The car is ready for service, bedecked with a siren, painted blue-and-white, and the word ``POLIZIA'' - ``police'' - stenciled on the side.

Police showed it off at an anniversary celebration in Rome on Friday. They said the Lamborghini will be used on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway in southern Italy, for emergencies and to transport organs for transplant.

Lamborghini, which is owned by Volkswagen and based near Bologna in northern Italy, donated the car. The six-speed, two-door luxury vehicle promises the ability to go from zero to 60 mph in four seconds, and has a list price of $165,000.

Every Police force should have them, and they can, very easely.
Step into the inpound car park of your local police station and you will find lots of cars rotting that could well be used to improve police work, instead of just slowly rotting away.
There should be a provisin that allowed the aprehended material to be used in fighting crime. What better use to give some money apreheended on a drug deal or a car from the local auto theft ring, than to give it back to the police to equip itself better?
Instead of having it burned or wrecked or given back to the State, every police station should be given first choice on what to do with unreturnable items, like cars, inpounded money, radios, scanners, weapons, or whatever.
Thereīs a lot of high gain cars that just get sent to auctions and sold for scrap, when they could be put to good use.
Just the other day, a cop died here, because his motorbyke broke in the middle of a high speed chase. The front suspension broke, and sent him flying! Without wings...
The cops are still struggling with dirt old and broken pieces of scrap, that the government insists on calling "vehicles"...
Only our equivalent of the highway patrol has received a few new vehicles, the Subaru Impreza. But even the Impreza isnīt a match for the high power cars that run our roads like a Grand Prix. Some Ferraris would come in handy, yes sir! Or even Lamborghinis, wich is almost the same thing.

I have never seen a police car older than ~5 years... And why would you need a car that's able to go faster then 200-220 km/h? It's not like you're able to drive that fast anyway, it wouldn't be safe (for the policeofficer AND other traffic)

(btw, Dutch police used to have Porche 911 convertibles until the early nineties... )

Thatīs because youīve never been to sunny Portugal! Out here we "proud" ourselfs of our moving death traps, that our government insists on calling vehicles.
Oh, and about the fast cars:
A fast car isnīt just fast. It has also a greater power of acceleration, greatly needed when pursuing a bunch of bank robbers on city roads. And since most cars can reach 200 km/h on a highway, if you expect to catch them you better drive a fast car too.
