26th April 1986
http://www.angelfire.com/extreme4/kiddofspeed/
Pretty cool yet disturbing site dealing with the 26th of April 1986.
I can remember sitting in school when the news broke that some 3000 km's away the reactor had blown a few days earlier and all the rules as to what you can and can't eat (e.g wildlife and mushrooms were on the food index). There were worries how much radiation came down on us and where it was heading....
Sometimes I wonder what my kids will ask me about this and other events that have happened in my childhood... but then... it's not this portion of history will disappear or be forgotten in 500 years... or has it already?

I still remember it. And i donīt believe it will fade out of peopleīs memory for at least 50 years.
But why did you remember this all of a sudden? Been reading about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. have you?
By the way, whenīs the 3 Mile Island anniversary?

a) it is coming up as aniversary
b) I read an article on the halflife of the nuke core of tchernobyl
c) I stumbeled upon the page while looking at a chronology of events back then.
Who is stalker? Was he "nuked"?
The 3 Mile Island Mishap was March 28th, 25 years ago (1979). I don't know much about it as I was a) on the other side of the world and b) 3 years old).

STALKER is a video game due to release in the summer, based on Chernobyl.
Itīs a HALF LIFE type of game, with semi-real world locations, wich uses the Chernobyl incident as inspiration for its story.Mutants, zombies, etc etc. Pretty much what you find around Chernobyl, actually!
I heard they found some earth worms the size of snakes up there! And the deers were all messed up, some were born inside out or something...
Radiation does weird stuff to all living creatures.
Aparently, the reactor was active for years, buried under tons and tons of concrete, wich they dumped over it to stop the radiation leak. I wonder how it is now? It was rebuilt, wasnīt it?
:meh:
EDIT:
Some links about it HERE

No, Chernobyl was never rebuilt. It is in a concrete saphogarus. It will in any near human history not be used for anything as the halflife of the nuklear materials are like 30+ years and it will take a minimum of about 20 times before the radiation levels are acceptable for humans.... The nuclear core will be a shining blob of crap for at least the next 5000 years though....
The only rebuilding that is done is the maintenance on the concrete saphogarus....
Quote from the article:
The Chernobyl accident killed more than 30 people immediately, and as a result of the high radiation levels in the surrounding 20-mile radius, 135,00 people had to be evacuated.
This is funny, as the millions that were affected by it, died of increased cancers and other radiation related illnesses were never counted. 30 immidiately is the plant crew, the thousands in the town that died within days I suppose aren't counted as "immidiate".

Yes, it was.
I thought it too, but then when i started reading the link i posted above, i learned otherwise.
The reactor 4 was kept closed under tons of concrete, but the station was rebuilt, and the remaining 3 reactors were kept working tiīll the year 2000.
READ HERE
READ HERE ALSO
I havenīt been able to find the article i read before, but the above links are enough to show how the plant was rebuilt and remained in operation untill late 2000.
Quote:
"Chernobyl is still in operation (there is not sufficient generating capacity in the Ukraine for its closure) and countless, more minor, incidents have occurred since 1986."
PS:Itīs not "saphogarus", itīs a sarcophagus.

WoW! I learned soemthing new... I was under the destinct impression that the whole plant was shut down and nothing could be used out there any more as it is all highly contaminated. Guess I was wrong... Where do the workers live though? There is an 80 mile dead zone around Reactor #4....? But I guess nobody cares about those folks working and dieing there...
http://www.infoukes.com/history/chornobyl/
pretty good site with lots of information on chernobyl.
thanks for pointing out my type of sarcophagus... leave it up to them egyptians to come up with something like that ;D

Considering how Russia is the neighbour of my country, it is not very comforting to hear news about their current nuclear power plant problems and the bad shape the plants are in. Several of them should be closed down but there is no replacement for them.
