This was posted over on ShareConnector, too. As was pointed out over there:

I've heard that you really can't actually delete any email that you send or recieve via Gmail at all. You can remove it from the listing that your client calls up, so you don't have to see it again yourself, if you don't want to, but it still remains safely stored in Google's massive storage database virtually forever. They scan all the email to match up the user with specifically targeted advertising based on a keyword seach of your emails.

any free mail that offers a mailbox more than 25mb has a catch to it somewhere, from what I hear, GMAIL might not even make cause of some privacy issues.

Google's mail ought not make it simply because of the above mentioned privacy issues. On the other hand even the name gmail is contested by a british company.
Feel free to find the flaws on the above link.

In Britain, the govt has the power to read your emails, hence I cant see what more damage could google do by having a machine store info from your emails. Privacy violation? Sure, but then that was already in place, and without 1gb mailspace

In Germany e-mail is still covered under the mail laws and hence have the same status as a letter. Simply put, it is one thing for the government to read your e-mail if it has anything to do with law enforcement action and is properly sanctioned. It is another if some company just reads your conversation and uses the information to target you based on the content with advertisement!
