Sony's latest initiative to promote the PSP as an 'entertainment centre', and not merely a games handheld, is available from this week, dubbed the 'PSP Media Manager'. This new utility is a multi-purpose organisational tool for the PC, and allows PSP users to arrange and transfer video, music and photo content onto their PSP, as well as convert files from various formats to PSP-friendly versions. The tool can also alter the quality of the various files supported to alter the disk space required on the Memory Stick, it even includes quick previews of files being managed and is touted as being remarkably easy to operate. In-keeping with the latest trends, the new Manager will also make keeping abreast of RSS feed content easier, including the various casts so de rigeur at the moment.

The Sony Media Software site is currently selling the new software as a 19.95 USD download, but from December 1st you will also be able to order a boxed copy of the same software from the same site for 29.95. This pack will come with a 6-foot USB transfer cable, and will offer samples of the PSP's variously supported media, as well as five free downloads from Sony's CONNECT online music shop. Sony will be hoping that this software can forge a stronger link with this service in particular as they look to the PSP to rival the new video-toting Apple iPod this festive season.

Hmm.. I wonder how open it will be in being able to transfer video over... Seems like they are very wary of video and audio data being on there.. but I know some hacks already exist.

Can I just pop a copy of a movie I made on there? Some how I doubt it. I am sure they just want me to be able to play my homemade porn movies on it.
