Default can PS3 play all the ps2 games?

Sony claims that ps3 is totally backward compatible with ps2 but i have heard that there are some ps2 games which do not work properly on ps3. Is it true?

Yep! This is true. Specifically the 80G PS3 versions which is said to have limited backward compatibility (Don't know what that means). The 40G version does not play any older PS games at all.

So, why sony is claiming the full backward compatibility of ps3. They may loose their reputation because the buyers (who dont know) may feel cheated.

I can only assume they weren't aware of the problems it had for some games but at this time they're taking off backward compatibility in their consoles (not sure if all) to reduce their price.

Yea, PS3 is not fully backward Compatible. Some do work and many don't. This should have been taken care of by Sony but probably they overlooked it while designing PS3.

Yes, you will find different problems with different ps2 games. Sometimes, background music wont play, sometimes screen would freeze and with some other games, controls become unresponsive.

You guys are right you can't play PS2 games in a Ps3 console. My friend and I try it once and it never played, So we play on his old PS2 console instead. Hope that helps you.

The whole "Different editions" thing annoys the piss out of me. I'm a PS2, and a PSX gamer, and if I buy a PS3 that is supposed to be backwards compatible, then I expect it to be backwards compatible.

See, these consoles are getting too complicated too fast. And WTF on taking out backwards compatibility? It's a software emulator, I know how emulation works.

This is why I won't be getting the PS3. I HATE when they do this. There aren't a lot of games I want for PS3, so it's not worth it unless I can carry my PS1/2 games over to it. Xbox360, here I come baby!
