Debate Regarding Sony's Dominance...
The Playstation 2’s lead is not as large as some tend to think. Neither the Xbox nor the Gamecube will ever catch the Playstation 2 in console sales. The Playstation 2 can still lose this console war even with having the most consoles sold worldwide. You may ask, how could this be? I will give you an example. Every one watches sports or has played a sport at some point in their lives. A perfect example is the game of football. One football team could have a total of 500 yards of offense, while their opponent could only have 100 yards of total offense and still end up losing the game. How can a team with 500 yards of total offense lose? It is simple; they never scored a touchdown. In system wars the game is still 0 to 0. The Playstaion 2 is gaining all of the yards, but has not scored the winning touchdown yet. I know you are asking, how can the Playstation 2 lose? It is something called perception. What are people going to think about the Playstation 2 three to four years from now? Will the Playstation 2 be perceived as the system that is outdated? Perception can change very quickly. Micheal Jordan was onced perceived as the greatest player to play the game, but when you look at Micheal Jordan compared to his new competition he looks very old and outdated. Even his former team the Chicago Bulls, which had millions of fans, are now perceived as a bunch of losers. You can’t get 500 people to go to a Bulls game now. The same thing that happened to the Bulls and Micheal could happen to the Playstation 2. People are starting to notice the differences between the Xbox and Playstation 2. People are also noticing the difference between the Gamecube and Playstation 2. The Playstation 2 is constantly receiving the worst port of games. Will consumers perception of the Playstation 2 become synonymous with inferior and outdated hardware, while the Gamecube and Xbox become synonymous with cutting edge technology and the systems to own? In the end, the Playstation 2 could have gained all the yards, but the Gamecube or Xbox could score the winning touchdown.
