I spend a good amount of time researching the different candidates, their views, their past records, etc. It is generally true that a candidate's past is a good indicator of their future decisions (generally, but not 100%). It is also generally true that in the months leading up to an election, candidates views often change from their prior record and once the election ends, their views often revert.
I end up voting for the candidate whose entire life most closely matches my philosophy towards the issues that I find important. Sometimes that means a candidate that is from an opposing political viewpoint, sometimes not.
