This is one of the many "DIABLO" type 'features' that have sneaked into DSII
(suspect some of the Diablo folks moved over to Gas Powered). The death
system is another--respawning in the nearest town without equipment but with
a trunk full of stuff available. There is no way around this--(I also
dislike this system). What you need to do is to always make your way to a
transporter before quitting the game. A town portal won't work because it
is not preserved through a shut down and restart of the game. Once you
catch on, this is not too difficult a thing, until near the end of the game
where the transporters get farther apart and the monsters become more
numerous and nasty. OTOH, fighting your way back to an old location (since
monsters respawn in DSII) does build your experience and will get you more
points towards special abilities--which you will need in ACT III.
