Sadly enough a lot of politicians do not have an opinion. They just want power and money. One way is to take the opinion of the majority because that get's you votes. I think that what is happening politically with gay marriages in the US is worse. As you say, gay mariage should be trivial to allow, but because a lot of people have strong opinions on the subject based on fear, gay marriage is a great political tool to distract from the important issues and to enhance the general feeling of fear that has proven to be so useful for the Bush administration. If you speak out against gay marriage, you speak out against uncertainty and the unknown and that gives a lot of people the comfortable feeling that got Bush reelected.
