It is a democratic reason. Although the majority shouldn't have a say when it comes to the rights of a minority, in the real world they have. When a politician stands up for the rights of a minority he can be voted out of office. That's why gay people still don's enjoy equal rights in generally homophobic democratic countries like the US.
