Don't forget, it was the UN and not the US who created Israel. The UN decided that land would be "stolen" from the Palestinians (although the Palestinians were free to remain and in fact encouraged to to so). The British controlled the land from 1920 until 1948 and supported the Arabs who lived there. The UN decided to partition the land between the Jews and Arabs when floods of Jewish refugees had made their way into the area making Jews the majority. This partitioning was rejected by the Palestinian Arabs and they attacked the new Jewish settlements in 1948 (they attacked the town of Tirat Tzevi). Neighboring Arab nations joined in these attacks. The Israel Defense Army was established and counterattacked driving back the Arabs. As we all know, fighting has occurred sporadically on both sides ever since.

Israel exists largely because of the UN General Assembly resolution on November 29, 1947 for the establisment of a Jewish state in Palestine.
