Obviously a horrific act. Do the authors ever go into what happened to those who rebuilt? Seems to me that even a wide-spread assault like this wouldn't have been the end of this group's prosperity. People who know how to make money keep making money.

Also, I disagree with the author's etymological origins of the word "picnic". The true origin of the word is French, from "pique-nique" - literally "pick trifle". It originally denoted a party where everyone brought some food, like pot-luck. Even assuming that the author is correct, how would he explain the use of the word in Britain during the 1800's; long before there were lynchings in America?
