OIL is finite and we all knew it ever since we started using it!
Well there are alternatives for oil:
cars: Hydrogen is a vialble solution, however there is no infrastructure. If the gvt and the industry would want to they could just get this kicked off and make us at least transportation wise independant from oil... Hybrrid cars would at least lower the amount of fuel needed. Whenever the hydrogen cars come, we will not have to worry about crap any more as we don't have a problem since we don't burn a boatload of it.
energy: Nuclear power is safe, there is enough space to build them in population starved areas and we will be able to stop burning of oil, gas and cole.
Also, renewable energies e.g. solar panels on the houses would improve the energy usage. at least where you have enough sunshine.
I am looking at covering part of my roof with it to save $ on my electric bills... Living in an aera where I do never get covered by snow it would be a 365 days of production of energy... FREE OF POLUTION. If the gvt. would be willing, they could give incentives for homeowners to do so and even force electric companies to purchase the overage not used by this home owner to support other businesses (Germany has had a pilot program 8 years ago with just those ideas encompassed).... I am dreaming for that to happen in the US... I know but a nice dream it is!
