When the Christians were committing atrocities in the name of the religion, Christianity was not a source of those crimes.

Appropriate? Probably. Would it be very useful? Unlikely. It is much more important to ensure that the crimes of the past will not be repeated. You have to remember that Germany is the only country to publically accept the guilt. It's not like Spain, for example, officially apologized for the crimes committed by the Spanish conquistadors
