Two days latter he resigned under the torrent of public backlash. Course, no one in the public would've heard about it without the media.

Six days ago, Senator Robert Byrd cast his 17,000th vote and the Senators rose to praise him. Connecticut Senator Christopher Dodd said that Byrd was a "man for all seasons" and would have been equally right for the founding of the country as well as during the Civil War. In fact, Mr. Dodd couldn't think of a time in history when Senator Byrd would not have been right for the country.

So who's Robert Byrd? Rober Byrd was a member of the Ku Klux Klan. After WWII, Byrd wrote of his hopes for the rebirth of the Klan in his home state of W. Virginia. In 1964 Byrd participated with fellow Democrats in an effort to filibuster the Civil Rights Act. Three years ago Byrd used the "N" word repeatedly in a Fox News interview. This is a "man for all seasons"?

Have you heard about this? Probably not. And why not? Why was Trent Lott so vehemently and expediently lambasted for his comments and Mr. Dodd has not? Who can say for sure. But I think it's interesting to remember that Mr. Lott is a Republican and Mr. Dodd is a Democrat.
I know this has gotten a lot of play on Fox News, and I am sure it will be picked up by other outlets soon enough. Do you remember if the Strom Thurmond backlash was immediate? I ask because I believe the Byrd situation will get big coverage and it will only show bias IF the Thurmond situation got immediate attention (since the Byrd situation hasn't).
